Another “strange” classification … But you might ask yourself this question when buying a kayak:
Sit-On-Top or Sit-In?
Here are a few points to help you.
Sit-inside or the “standard” kayak
As you sit inside, you are more protected from water, cold – and sun, too. In consequence it will be a drier ride, especially if you buy a spray deck. So, this is more the all-round type of kayak that suits all weather conditions.
In generally, you sit more comfortably inside than on a sit-on-top, which makes it more suited for longer trips. But take care of your leg space, especially if you are tall and looking for a sportive kayak. Test it before … In a nutshell, this is the all-season kayak for trips and expeditions.
You sit in something like a molded seat on top of your kayak, ergo you are fully exposed to wind and weather. There are literally no means to keep you dry on a rainy or stormy day – except for a dry suit, of course. Great for the warm season – but don’t forget your sun protecting cream.
Sit-on-top (SOT) kayaks are great sea fishing and playing in the surf. As you can easily jump into the water, they are perfect for diving and snorkeling. If you have kids, this kayak can be their ideal platform for playing, hopping on and off. SOTs are great fun, especially in summer time!
